CREATING SPACE

“ I like to create things that exist in spaces - spaces between - not quite in this space or that - something in between.”

My creative life has been filled with many wonderful spaces.

After well over a decade teaching and creating in the NZ education sector, I entered one of the largest spaces imaginable - the vast Australian outback.

Space in the desert has been rightfully described by many creative minds as both physical and metaphysical.

Certainly the Australian Indigenous artists (with whom I had the pleasure of working) would express it in these terms.

‘space between’ continues to occupy my imagination and is at the centre of all that I create - between one social construct and another, between this world and that, between this country, culture, philosophy and another.

I find myself forever perched precariously on the middle stair.
